Shopping in Malaga

The beautiful province of Malaga and Costa del Sol offer an amazing shopping experience. Visitors can choose between shopping in large shopping malls or getting lost in the streets of various towns, discovering curiosities and antiques in the network of streets and taking home traditional and artisanal products from the area.

The most touristy municipalities of Malaga enjoy flexible hours during certain times of the year, such as during Holy Week, summer holidays, Christmas and during local holidays, since it’s considered an area of great touristic influence.

The shops around the marina tend to close later. The eleven ports on the coast are an unmatched setting for enjoying a shopping day. Puerto Marina in Benalmádena stands out for its beauty and is known as the largest artificial port in the world whose architectural design is already a tourist attraction in itself.

One of the biggest exponents of shopping in the Malaga province is the city of Marbella. In this town, there is a high saturation of large, nationally renowned multi-brand shops, exclusive malls and one of the most exclusive enclaves, Puerto Banús, where you’ll find the most prestigious international name brands. Enjoy exclusivity and luxury in every shopfront. Select boutiques, such as Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Hermes, Loewe, Dior or Versace as well as jewellery shops, with brands like Carrera, Bulgari or Swarovski.

Another option are the so-called “open air shopping centres”, usually located in the historic city centre, which, in order to compete with the larger shops, offer facilities, such as free parking, credit card payment, gift raffles, discounts, etc.

The most diverse buying and selling happens at the traditional street markets, which you’ll find in practically all the towns. Like clockwork, they setup their stands in the open air on specific days of the week. You’ll find stalls selling fresh produce, shoes, clothing, artisanal products, tech gadgets, all at very affordable prices. Here, they are nicknamed rastrillos or mercadillos and a few specialise in certain items. This is the case in Marbella, Manilva or Fuengirola, which turn into transformed spaces with antiques, stamps or jewels.

The culinary offerings of the Malaga province are of the highest quality. Virgin olive oil, the staple of the Mediterranean diet, raisins from the Axarguía region, which later are turned into Moscatel, wine of the region. Also in this area you’ll find quality exotic fruits. In the mountainous region of Ronda, you’ll find a great variety of cold and cured meats as well as delicacies made with chestnuts. In the Genal Valley, the fruits and vegetables from the garden are the protagonists, as well as the sweetness you get from local products, such as bienmesabe (marinated dogfish), torrijas (French toast) or roscos de vino (typical “wine doughnut”) from Antequera, Ronda, Archidona or any inland village.

Finally, if you want to take advantage of your visit to get to know the melting pot of flavours and local products from Malaga you can visit the website http://www.saboramalaga.es, a space where you’ll find the best products in the province with certified quality and discover the rich gastronomy of Malaga and its entire province.
